In the starry sky of Chinese modern history, as a pioneer in the cause of advanced culture, an outstanding politician, and also a remarkable journalist, Hu Yuzhi is the most brightest one. He dedicated his whole life to the cause of the Chinese Press and Publication, and left a substantial amount of wealth to us who wants to follow his step.Liberalism and Nationalism seems to have permeated every section of Hu Yuzhi' s news thought. Thence, he pursed independence, personal choice and also love and loyalty to his nation all over his life. He believed that liberalism was approach to solve the difficulties faced by Chinese society, therefore he advocated the important role for the society' s development played by the media, struggled for the rights of media coverage and edit, and defended the freedom of speech.Hu Yuzhi made a comprehensive theoretical thinking about Journalism. Western journalism theory always indicated five kinds of function of Journalism which is Communication, Guiding public opinion, Education, Entertainment and advertising. Hu Yuzhi united these five kinds of functions into three, which is Communication, Guiding public opinion and Society service. He stressed: News reports must be loyal to facts; and the diversification of sources of information is a prerequisite for the truth of the news; and we should pay attention to the timeliness of report, and so on.Based on the literature analysis and historical analysis, this study wants to discuss the essence of Hu Yuzhi' s news thought which mixes Liberalism and Nationalism.
