The Research On The Narrative Of China Town

"China Town", a 100 episodes documentary made by Phoenix Group, offers a panoramic display of real lives of overseas Chinese by taking their existence and development as the main clue, the Chinese customs as the secondary clue and the emigration history of Chinese as the background. The show rose to one of the top shows in Phoenix Chinese TV once it was put on air. In 2003, it won the Special Award and Best Recording Award in the Ninth China Television Documentary Academic Award. Its popularity with both the audiences and Academic field is quite worthy for us to ponder over.Based on narrative theories, this dissertation made a comprehensive analysis of the show both from the micro and macro perspectives by adopting text narrative, genre research and content analysis as the major research methods. The analysis on the text of the show is carried out in three aspects: the narrative plot, narrative subject and narrative structure. It is found out that the show, by its strict and meticulous narrative arrangement is by and large effected by a certain ideology; in succession, exploration into the discourse producing mechanism of the Phoenix Group has also been made. Besides, it is also pointed out that "China Town" has embarked on the road of programs to be inevitably model and type.This research makes some innovations in the following aspects: first, it is the first research on "China Town" that is carried out based on narrative theories; Second, this research is not confined to the analysis on only a single narrative element, quite different from that, it covers both the micro and macro, technological and discourse aspects of the show; third, this research makes a comprehensive and detailed analysis on the show by closely combining content analysis and narrative analysis, which would contribute to a better supporting of the theory and views of the essay.
