Web GIS has become an important direction of GIS technology development and driven to maturity. Earth observation by space-borne microwave synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has stepped into operational stage with rapidly development, and particularly, SAR has turned out to be the most important, potential and widely used sensor in satellite oceanography. Most SAR data management and sharing platforms in the world based on Web GIS are for browsing and ordering SAR data products, such as the related platforms of SAR ground stations of ESA and each country. In this paper, an interactive platform for SAR data management and sharing based on Web GIS has been developed to meet the research requirement of the National Lab for Ocean Remote Sensing of Ministry of Education (MOE). The platform has not only data browsing and ordering functions, but also interactive functions between the platform and the users as well as among the users.This paper briefly introduced the purpose meaning to build the platform, and then the domestic and foreign situation of SAR data platforms, related principles of Web GIS and key technologies, and also a variety of space-borne SAR data and their storage formats. An interactive platform for SAR data management and sharing based on Web GIS using B/S model has been established, with an architecture divided into three tiers: the user service tier, the business logic tier, and the database service tier. The database made use of spatial database to store and retrieve SAR data. The business logic tier used MVC design model. The user interface used Ajax technology. All of the software packages used in the implementation of the platform are open sourced, including the Linux system, the Apache Web server, the PostgreSQL database, the ka-map map server, the prototype class libraries, the Cximage class libraries of image, etc. SAR data backup and security issues were also considered.Function modules of the platform mentioned above include data retrieval, data browsing, data access, user management, auxiliary information, the database overview, management sub-system, etc., as in the similar platforms in the world, and function modules for interaction between users and the platform including interaction of SAR data ocean phenomenon information, interaction of marine environment parameters retrieval by SAR data , interaction of SAR oceanographical news, etc. were particularly designed and partly implemented. The designing ideas about interaction had't been reported in related document before. The interactive platform for SAR data management and sharing based on Web GIS established in this paper has been test running in the National Lab for Ocean Remote Sensing of MOE.
