Single phase of electric traction load is characterized by its mobility, frequency and large variation. Moreover, the negative component and harmonics have negative impact upon power system. Therefore, load model of electric traction is an important issue to design and operation of electric power systems. It has attracted extensive attention.The paper introduces statistical syntheses based approach and measurement based approach to model electric traction load. The measurement based approach is the most frequently used method in comprehensive load modeling. It does not rely on the statistical data and the modeling data come directly from the actual system. The approach is practical and effective method. It has kept drawing on the latest advances of system identification in theory and has been used by the majority of scholars and technical staff.Based on the needs of the measurement based method, the paper develops an electrified railway traction load characteristics record and analysis system. The design of system software is analyze in the paper. The data acquired by this system can be used for electrified railway traction power system load modeling.The development of electric power load modeling is discussed and the most frequently used load models are described. The characteristic of electric traction load and its impact upon power grid are analyzed. Thereafter, composition of electric traction system and the principle and approach to model electric traction load are analyzed. The principle, step, and advantages of measurement based approach are concluded. The overall design scheme of Digital Fault Recorder for electric traction load modeling is developed. The software package are coded with VC++6.0. The software can carry out data communication, processing, display, harmonic analysis, and data storage and transmission. The prototype has been developed and the system has been tested. Experiments shows the system can achieve desired performance.
