The Global Positioning System (GPS) has a wide range application such as topographical survey, navigation and dynamic positioning of aircraft, highly precise timing and communication. As a result, the design and development of GPS receiver could not only serve our daily life, but also promote the development of navigation technology of our country。That is to say, the design and development of GPS receiver has both social and economic meaning.With the development of IC's technology and methodology of IC design, RF (radio frequency) IC can be realized by using CMOS technology, which is the mature and economical technology widely used in the field of digital IC. So, it is possible that to fabricate the digital IC, analog IC, RF IC on a single chip using CMOS technology. Design the system on a chip has been a hotspot of the nowadays research.This thesis introduces the common architectures of receiver and chooses low IF architecture to realize the GPS receiver according to the spectrum of the GPS signal. And the Heartly architecture is used to solve the image signal problem of the low IF receiver. This thesis also introduces the principal, classification, specification of mixers and chooses Gilbert mixer as the core mixer circuits after comparing different kinds of mixer. The thesis analyzes the Gilbert mixer in details and gives the complete methodology of design and optimization. Several auxiliary circuits such as biasing circuits, LDO, the buffer LO signals. The methodology and skills for the design of analog/RF layout are also introduced in this thesis, the layout of the whole mixer are also given. The last past of the thesis shows the simulation methods and simulation results of the mixer.
