With the development of network and communication technologies, users more and more tend to do businesses on the Internet, which causes the increasing of data resources' construction, however, without a complete plan, most of the local database are independent from each other, they use different DBMS, or run in different operation system or any other different environment, as a result, they become heterogeneous data resources. To the users, they need access to heterogeneous data resources to get data, and then they have to make a transformation between different heterogeneous data, that cause a lot of time and energy. This fact pushes us to use heterogeneous data integration technology to shield the heterogeneity, and then develop a unified search platform which could integrate the distributed data sources, supplying users with the uniform search pages and demonstrating the search results to users in uniform format.Directory services are new information querying services. As one of directory services protocols, LDAP whose full name is Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, has the characters of platform-independence, language-independence, quick querying. Directory services which are based on LDAP protocol are especially applicable to system integration and cross-platform data communications.Based on the above, this thesis introduces the theories and technologies which are related to integration technology of heterogeneous data resources. Then, based on LDAP directory services, it brings forward the architecture of heterogeneous data source unified search system. To standardize and make uniform processing to the search service of heterogeneous data sources and to display the search results in uniform format, it gives XML as the uniform search service model, it elaborates on algorithms of transformation between uniform search service model and the relational data, the design of LDAP schema and Inquiry sentence decomposition algorithm. Besides, it gives the design details of architecture of integration system, the relation between all parts, and the technology used in core parts. At last, the paper implements the prototype system and elaborates on how to implement for each module, including the following modules: transformation between uniform search service model and the relational data, LDAP schema design, inquiry sentence decomposition and simple sample of search web service developed for the heterogeneous data sources.The heterogeneous data integration system based on LDAP takes advantage of the metadata integration pattern and the high speed of LDAP, and it can enrich the local metadata database while retrieving. It solves the problem of making the metadata database keep in step with the data sources. So its search efficiency is much higher. It also has high integration capability and can achieve transparent integration to data sources' query interfaces. So it can search any data source as long as its search service was registered. This system is cross-platform, expansive, and easy to maintain, so it has high practical value.
