With the development of the modern ages, things that need to be exhibited by science museum expand to all aspects of life. Science museum has to exhibit not only concrete objects, like cultural relics, facilities, or specimens, but also abstract concepts, such as methods, principles, technologies, customs, spirits, ideas, or processes. In the process of exhibition, besides introducing concrete objects and their effects, science museum is supposed to involve visitors in experiencing abstract ideas, methods and processes of which concepts are difficult to be revealed in concrete objects and are better to be displayed via certain medium. In fact, it is impossible to display these abstract concepts through tangible materials now that concepts that are to be exhibited keep expanding.Modes of exhibition, as the bridge between visitors and items on display, play an increasingly important role in science museum, especially with the development of digital information technology, which in turn is stimulating science museum exhibition to innovate and develop. The thesis is to study and analyze the development of modes of exhibition, application and characteristics of general modes, and technology of the latest modes in science museum from the perspectives of environmentology, psychology, behavioristics, and information science. It proposes creative concepts both material and spiritual, aiming to seek modes of exhibition that match economic development and social needs. The results achieved are as follows:1. By examining the development and perspective of science museum, the thesis gives a conclusion to its stages of development and their characteristics, especially the application of modes of exhibition in different stages.2. By summing up and explaining general modes of exhibition in science museum as well as the latest developments, it concludes and analyzes the functions and characteristics of exhibition technology in the application of these modes, which helps to learn exhibition-related science and technology and to propose and analyze two kinds of innovation in interactive modes of exhibition in science museum—the material innovation and the spiritual innovation. Considering the characteristics of science museum exhibition, it proposes to integrate museum collection exhibition and interactive exhibition through blending technologies available in order to strengthen visitors' experience and learning effects, by interactions between visitors and collection. Taking limitations on site, fund and human resources of science museum, it puts forward a new mode of exhibition—family-oriented virtual interactive science museum—to enable museum goers to be absorbed in experiencing whatever they favor by simply wearing 3D glasses and digital gloves without leaving their home, with the aid of virtual technologies and internet links, and in the mean time it will enable science museum spread to every family.3. As for the aspect of spiritual innovation in modes of exhibition, it focuses on studying collaborative technology, advocating blending collaborative cooperation into interactive multimedia exhibition, and analyzes characteristics of application of collaborative cooperation in interactive exhibition. Through interactive multimedia technology, visitors can accomplish a task by joint effort and cooperation, which will generate collaborative or competitive relationships, realize interactions between visitors and multimedia or between different visitors, and promote their sense of cooperation in the process of learning within a positive atmosphere.
