E-Learning has become an important research and application area, which attracts numerous researchers and practitioners's attention. At present, different institutions organize, package and release learning content in different ways, the forms of E-Learning content are different, also the duplication of E-Learning content, seriously hinder the popularity and development of E-Learning. In order to support E-Learning content reusing, sharing and exchange, new ways are needed to organize and manage E-Learning content. This research is based on the idea of learning objects, by the means of description of learning objects' properties, as well as the definition of learning objects package and organization, supports the exchange and reusing of E-Learning content. XML (extensible Markup Language) provides sufficient support to information description and exchange. In this study, XML is an effective mechanism to support the description of the E-Learning content.Based on the study and analysis of the related research results at home and abroad, the main research work in this thesis are as follows: At first, the learning object and LCMS (Learning Content Management System) architecture is elaborated, IMS (IMS Global Learning Consortium) standards and related key technologies such as the organization, storage and reuse of learning content are in-depth analysis. Then, use the form of learning object to define and describe learning content, define the hierarchy between them, separate the learning object description and content with XML. Design learning object meta-data models to describe the learning objects' attributes and learning object models to describe the learning objects' structure. Finally, this paper discusses the storage strategy of the E-Learning content, on the basis of which the design and realization of a prototype system LCMS is discussed. In this thesis, learning object meta-data models and learning object models are proposed on the basis of IMS learning resource metadata model and IMS content packaging conceptual model, which provide a better support for reusing, searching and exchange of the learning content in LCMS.
