Developed from laser shock processing, laser shock forming is a novel technique by applying a compressive shock wave in sheet metal plastic deformation. The mechanism of laser shock forming has been analyzed. The physical process, how laser shock wave generated and its mechanical effect have been introduced.During sheet metal forming, the influencing factors including coatings, transparent layers, laser parameters, sheet metal parameters and boundary conditions have been discussed.According to requirements of laser shock forming experiment platform, the characteristics of the platform control system have been analyzed.SINUMERIK 840Di is assumed as the control system,on which research and developments are made.Laser shock equipment structure has been presented, which are SINUMERIK 840Di CNC, laser,five-axis worktable and auxiliary equipments.840Di CNC has been researched including hardware, software and principles.PLC programs have been compiled in communications, hardware and network configuration.Principles of high power pulsed laser have been studied and it is controlled by ET200S.Parameters of five-axis worktable, servo system and interface connections between CNC and servo units have been given.Auxiliary functions include measurement of sheet deformation and I/O signals process,PLC programs are given.Experiments are carried out on the platform. Results show that the system is meeting the requirements.A method based on neural network has been presented to control sheet metal deformation for optimizing experimental parameters under different conditions. The neural network model was proposed between laser process parameters and sheet maximum deformation. It provides reference for optimizing laser shock parameters.
