When the term"cultural turn"is proposed by scholars of translation studies, outer factors affecting translation are paid attention to in translation studies. So, macro factors, such as translator, history, culture and politics in target context become the main concern of translation studies. Lefevere, one of the representatives of the Manipulation School, puts forward that translation is rewriting of source texts, which is manipulated by ideology, poetics, patronage and universe of discourse, in which ideology and poetics are the most important two. Translating activities are constrained by the historical and cultural contexts in which they situated, especially for those in a changing society are filled with clear purposes and social utility.The present thesis studies the manipulation of New Youth's ideology and poetics on its selection of literary source texts for translation. As the flag and bugle of the May 4th New Cultural Movement, New Youth plays a very important role in introducing foreign literature and advocating new literature. Since its literary translation is purposeful, New Youth's selection of source texts for literary translation is printed by its own ideology and poetics everywhere.The thesis first discusses the manipulation of New Youth's ideology on its source texts selection. The author finds that there is a big difference between two stages of New Youth. In the first stage (1915-1917), European romantic and aesthetical works are selected as the main source texts for the purpose of learning the west, resisting the oppression, dethroning the feudal system, rejecting the old moral doctrines and advocating the new ones, as well as pursuing individual freedom and emancipation. In the second stage (1917-1921), works full of humanism and exposing social reality meet the requirements of the age with the victory of Russian October Revolution and the outbreak of the May 4th Movement. A great number of Russian literary works are introduced as an encouraging power; Japanese literary works are paid special attention to as an example of new national literature; meanwhile, out of sympathy with people in the oppressed countries, literary works of the oppressed countries are favored by with Ibsen Special Number issued.Selection of different literary genres represents the manipulation of New Youth's poetics on its source texts selection. To cater to the New Cultural Movement, reshape Chinese literary system and enrich literary genres, short stories are imported with the advantages of short length and persuasive power; lots of poems of various forms, such as free verse and national ballads, are introduced and translated; for the purpose of reforming old drama and constructing a new one, foreign dramas become the beloved of translators of New Youth as imitating objects.In conclusion, source texts for translation are never selected at random; it is controlled by institutional or individual ideology and poetics, which in turn are manipulated by ideology and poetics in a given time. Since ideology is such a wide concept that it contains poetics, the manipulations of the two are not independent from and of noninterference with each other. Most of the time, they work interactively, echo each other and jointly manipulate the source texts selection. Nevertheless, the manipulation of ideology is more powerful than that of poetics, and the manipulation of ideology always overwhelms that of poetics in source texts selection for literary translation.
