Microwave radiometer is a device which can receive radiant energy from objects. And this device can distinguish objects through the different temperatures that radiate from them. Generally, microwave radiometer is used to provide important information for the study of geoscience, astrophysics and astrochemistry. Such as ocean and environmental surveillance, atmosphere exploration, molecular clouds, stars formation and galactic study. Microwave radiometer also has important value on military stratagem, war field reconnaissance, security and drug detection. The detection capability of radiometer is determined by the temperature sensitivity and space resolution.By the development of science, technology and state of arts, fabricating radiometer that has higher frequency become reality. Submillimeter has a lot of merits like broader band, bigger information capacitance, higher resolution, better performance of anti-interference, better ability of penetrate plasm, bigger frequency float and higher sensitivity of speed measuring. So it has more significance for developing the submillimeter radiometer.This paper introduces basic concepts of submillimeter and submillimeter radiometer, and uses many words to present domestic and overseas development of submillimeter radiometer. The theory of radiometric measurement and the operating principle of Full-power radiometer and Dick radiometer are also introduced. Through the discussion of Full-power radiometer, Dick radiometer, Schottky diode mixer, SIS mixer and local oscillator, the design schemes of Front-end, power amplifier and square-law detector are presented.The design of submillimeter radiometer is an unexploited technology relatively. As for the whole system and the main sections of submillimeter radiometer, much more research work should be done to improve the performance and practicality.
