In the 1990s, a movement of Public Journalism emerged in the U.S. journalism profession and soon spread to other countries and areas. The movement involved many parts of the society and promoted the widespread practice of public journalism in the U.S., which offers new ideas and methods for American news report practice.In the year 2003, the theory of public journalism was introduced to China. A news program called 1860 News Eyes of Jiangsu TV was inspired and became the first in Chinese media who held the banner of Public Journalism, thus made Public Journalism known by Chinese public and there appeared a hot local communication of Public Journalism theory and practice.The article focuses on the topics below: the definition, aim, character and the exact practice of public journalism, the respective reasons of its appearance and its development in the U.S. and China, its influence on Chinese traditional ideas of journalism communication and its practical significance to Chinese journalism. The article takes the case of the public journalism practice made by Hangzhou media in their local news reports to analyze the local practice of public journalism, and discuss about how to apply the idea of public journalism properly to Chinese news report practice and reform, and finally prove that the development of public journalism in China has a promising future.
