Cultural Heritage sites are the very important material data in the research of the ancient history, culture, art and the development of science and technology. However, with the passage of time, these ancient historical and cultural sites are receiving considerable damages, which make the digital protection of these sites in urgent need. In addition, the reality-based virtual display technologies are as well in great need to widely spread the historical charms of these sites and improve their cultural and tourist values. Taking the Small Wild Goose Pagoda in Tang-Dynasty as the case, this paper focus on the following two aspects: the engineering application of the 3D scenes modeling based on laser scanning technology; the design and implementation of the 3D scenes virtual display system based on MapInfo and VR technology. The paper mainly researches the key technologies of the digital data acquisition, and of the 3D reality-based modeling from real data, and of the 3D virtual display for the cultural heritage sites. Then, the research should provide an example and reference for the digital protection of other culture heritage sites.This research is supported by national natural science foundation. The key achievements of the research as shown below:Firstly, this paper puts forward the method of the 3D digital data acquisition of the large cultural heritage sites by way of combining the technologies of the 3D laser scanning of the large scenes and the digital photography, which enables the prompt and accurate digital data acquisition without damaging the ancient buildings of the cultural heritage sites. Based on the methods proposed in the paper, the 3D virtual scenes model of Small Wild Goose Pagoda has been reconstructed.Secondly, based on comparing and analyzing the main algorithms of multi-viewpoint cloud registration, point cloud data simplify, and three-dimensional texture mapping, the paper improved the relevant algorithms for the specific needs of the three-dimensional scenes reconstruction of the cultural heritage sitesThirdly, based on the laser-synchronized visual image of the ancient buildings, the paper offers the method of the 3D reality-based modeling from real data with the adoption of the local texture mapping, and achieved a reality-based 3D digital modeling of the Small Wild Goose Pagoda.Finally, the paper introduces the systematic architecture, the key functions and all the key technologies of the 3D virtual display system based on MapInfo technology and VRP technology for the cultural heritage sites.
