With the development of Virtual Reality technology and people's recognition of archaeology, digital archaeology is becoming a new trend. As a part of digital archaeology, Modeling of the excavation site has not now been researched deeply. This paper puts forward a new 3D modeling technique for excavation site, which will make contribution to the blankness in a certain extent. At the beginning, the application and technical status of domestic and foreign digital archaeology is thoroughly analyzed. The thesis describes the advancing trend of digital archaeology, including 3D documentation, 3D representation and 3D dissemination. After analyzing the famous reconstruction technology and its application status at present, we bring forward the cut-in point and the sense of this thesis.Secondly, this paper introduces a 3D modeling method for excavation unit, and the corresponding equipment as well. It consists of five processes, including demarcating, image shooting, image matching, 3D reconstruction and 3D combination. We make use of a controllable rotator of high quality to adjust the positions between the two cameras, thus, we can apply polar based matching in image matching process. Compared with the traditional IBM, this method is much faster, as well as more accurate. The third part this thesis introduces some basic concepts and principles, while the fourth part describe the scheme in detail. Then it expatiate some pivotal arithmetic, as well as the experiment result. In the end, the work of the paper is summarized, and the future work is prospected.
