H.264/AVC is a new video compression coding standard established by the ITU-TVideo Coding Experts Group and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group .It hasachieved a significant improvement in compression performance and a"network-friendly"video representation relative to existing standards by adopting anumber of new coding techniques. H.264/AVC has been used in a broad range ofapplications, such as very low bit rate conversational services and entertainment qualitybroadcast, interactive video-on-demand services etc.H.264/AVC employs kinds of advanced coding techniques to improvecompression performance, such as motion complement(MC), prediction, variablelength coding(VLC) etc. The high compressed video data is very sensitive to error. Sothe error control based on H.264/AVC is a hot spot in currently research. And the studyof error control is very important for video communication system applications and fullof challenges. In this dissertation, the history of video compression is firstly introduced, and thenwe analysis the necessity of the study of error control techniques for a robustnesscommunication system. Thirdly, the mainly code techniques used in H.264/AVC arediscussed; Experimental results prove the advantage of the new standard then. Afterthat, we descript the error control techniques used in H.264/AVC in three categories:error resilient techniques used in existing standards, improved error resilient techniquesfor H.264/AVC and new error resilient techniques for H.264/AVC. A new algorithmcalled context-based inter error concealment(CIEC) algorithm is proposed, thealgorithm uses the spatial correlation of the objects to determine the mode of the lostblocks. And then restore the lost blocks on the basis of the estimated modes.Experiments show that the missing block with inhomogeneous motion can be betterrecovered with the proposed algorithm.
