JPEG is an international static image compression standard which is commonly used in the lossy compression of static images, it's characteristic is high compression ratio, low visible distortion. This paper studied the JPEG static image compression algorithm, and the Implementation and Optimization of JPEG encoder based on DSP are described in detail.This paper explained the operation principle of the encoder in JPEG, namely DCT varies, Quantization, Huffman coding, and the key algorithm processes of JPEG compression standard are detailed analyzed. And then we adopt fixed-point digital signal processing chip TMS320VC5509A manufactured by TI company. The program is migrated into DSP and optimization is developed. First, the arithmetic structure is adjusted for the Hardware structure of VC5509A DSP. Then, the memory allocation and storage space are optimized. C codes are optimized by using optimize options, inline function and software pipeline. This optimization can advance the encoder efficiency. The rate and results of encoder are analyzed and summarized in the end.The experimental results indicate that using JPEG standard can ensure an optimal trade-off between the image quality and the compression ratio. Furthermore, this method costs less time. Thirteen Gray-scale image of 720 x 576 can be sent to PC in one second. It ensures the real-time transmission of the embedded tele-surveillance system.
