Along with the improvement of the sonar technology and hardware processing capacity in recent years, the calculation of sonar data, especially sonar image data is growing quickly, an image preprocessing module can effectively share the burden of the CPU's. A solution of sonar image processing board with good computing efficiency and generality is provided in this paper.The tasks of the image processing board in sonar system include receiving and preprocessing image data from data collecting device, upload to storage interface, etc. These tasks can be divided into three parts which are also the three aspects discussed in this paper: carrier—hardware component of image processing module, interface—driver and application program, processing—the image preprocessing algorithms implementation on FPGA processor.FPGA, as the core processing unit, functions not only as the image processor, but also as the storage & I/O port controller. Considering the high data rate characteristics, the processing module interfaces with PC by PCI bus, there're two SDRAMs to guarantee the consistency and real-time communication of the data stream. A system driver and an interface application program are developed, with DMA transmission, the efficiency and reliability are ensured, human-computer interaction is also implemented. In this paper, some common algorithms in image preprocessing and characteristics of which are discussed, some typical algorithms like open-close and med-filter are then implemented on FPGA processor. The advantage of image preprocessing on FPGA is shown after comparison with PC.
