With the development of scientific technology, people gain much more knowledge of marine than before. Sonar technology provides more advanced means to help explore the ocean. Side scan sonar system combines acoustic, digital signal processing, navigation and positioning and computer technology. Its accuracy, resolution and image quality have increased significantly than traditional sonar system.GIS technology becomes more and more mature, which provides a better solution for all systems related to spatial information. Information recorded by sonar images could be represented better with the carrier of spatial position.Side scan sonar image processing system based on ArcEngine is put forward, using computer technology to process sonar image, afterward making multidimensional spatial analysis, and finally visualizing the complicated underwater world in a intuitionistic wayFirst of all, in-depth research on ArcEngine and related technology is conducted. The feasibility of development of sonar image processing system with ArcEngine is also analyzed. Key technologies and implementation are discussed emphatically, such as reading original sonar data(XTF file), geocoding sonar image and image enhancement. The system is still in trial operation stage, and the required functions are already achieved basically.Research proposes that, ArcEngine fits the work of side scan sonar image processing system, and has a cetain degree of flexibility. It's feasible to develop sonar image processing system using ArcEngine technology, combined with corresponding spatial database engine technology. The conclusion drawn is useful to related researches in future.
