Three-dimensional visualization on the stereoscopic display is one of the research hotspots in medical image field. As a powerful assistant method, it can make up the insufficiency of the imaging equipments, and provide the true three-dimensional medical images for users. Three-dimensional stereoscopic display system is helpful for doctors on the observation and the analysis from multiple views. It is playing more and more important role in many ways, such as clinic diagnosis, surgery operation, leading treatment and so on. So, the research on three-dimensional medical image stereoscopic display system has important significance on science and clinic applications.In this paper, firstly, the format of the medical image based on DICOM standard was analyzed, and implemented the data read. Then, image pre-processing methods were put forward. The principles of anisotropic diffusion filtering and segmentation algorithm on the level set were studied deeply. With regard to 3D reconstruction, two kinds of rendering methods including Marching Cubes surface rendering, ray casting, two-dimensional and three-dimensional texture mapping volume rendering were discussed in detail. By comparing these reconstruction approaches, a novel method based on segmentation was present. This method can accelerate the reconstruction speed greatly. Finally, the preliminary technology of the stereoscopic display was studied, and three-dimensional medical image can be visualized on the stereoscopic display.The three-dimensional medical image stereoscopic display system was designed in VC++6.0 based on VTK (Visualization Toolkit) and ITK (Insight Segmentation and Registration Toolkit). Now several major modules have been finished, including surface rendering, volume rendering, three-dimensional profiles display, measuring operations between the interested points and cutting operations to the reconstructed image in arbitrary direction. Furthermore, all of the 3D objects can be displayed on the stereoscopic display.
