Since the last 20 or 30 years, as the typical representative of the large-scale IP network, the Internet has been rapid development and has profound impacted on the country's political, economic, and the people's way of thinking. With the development of computer networks continually expanding the scale and complexity, network management has become a prominent difficulty and challenges that people encountered. In order to manage the network, people defined the nature, the content and the objectives of the network management, as well as the the concept of network engineering. Network topology discovery is an important branch of the network engineering and the basis of network management. At the same time, network topology discovery is the fundamental of Macro network layout, and is an important basis for network modeling network simulation, protocol design and evaluation and network algorithm improvement.With the characteristics of large-scale, complex, dynamic, heterogeneous and zero knowledge of, large-scale IP network topology discovery become challenging issues. Unlike the LAN topology discovery, the Internet topology discovery needs to step across different administrative domains. Research shows that SNMP-based topology discovery method for solving the problem of Internet topology found is difficult to achieve satisfactory results. Compared with the abroad research, the domestic study on the large-scale IP network topology discovery found was lack of integrity and systemic.In this paper, the location, concepts, goals, classification and other background of the network topology discovery are discussed in detail. And then the thesis makes on an in-depth study on the large-scale IP network topology discovery technology, such as the router alias analysis, discovery redundant optimization, subnet discovery, target address select and others key issues, and improve the technique from the aspects of efficiency, load, integrity and accuracy. The research also discussed the IPv6 network topology discovery, network topology visualization and network topology modeling.
