Cross-domain Application Of Military Words And Expressions In Sports News

Cross-domain application of words and expressions is a special pragmatic phenomenon in linguistics, and also an important way to realize generalization of a certain meaning which a word or expression has. As far as the research on cross-domain application of words and expressions is concerned at the present time, it has been mainly concentrated on the result—generalization of a certain meaning. While deep exploration to the process of cross-domain application remains a project which fewer scholars have studied. Taking cross-domain application of military words and expressions in sports news as example, and using the methodology based on Corpus, this thesis tries to explore the problems of cross-domain application of words and expressions from synchronic and diachronic aspects, with characteristics of a language and factors influencing the use of words taken into consideration.After analyzing the language materials sampled from China's Sports in 2007, the author of this thesis has collected the statistics of the application frequency and distribution of military words and expressions in the sports texts, and further points out the general characteristics of cross-domain application of military words and expressions in the world of sports. When analyzing the current situation of such kind of words used in the world of sports, the author then goes a step further to research into the reasons of cross-domain application of words from the aspects of society, culture and psychology, and then finds out the fact that cross-domain application of words plays important role in the process generalization of a certain meaning. A deep analysis and exploration is also given to the rhetoric device-Hmetaphor, which also has an important effect on cross-domain application of words. Based on what is discussed above, this thesis then probes into the rationality of cross-domain application of words, and finally anticipates its prospect in the future.The research on this subject will greatly contribute, both practically and theoretically, to the study of vocabulary in modern Chinese and its application. It will help people to understand the characteristics and rules of semantic shift from a new perspective. It will particularly offer new material exemplification and a new way of thinking for the research on additions of meanings, semantic transformation and so on. Last but not least important, it is a valuable reference for the research on cross-domain application of words in other fields.
