Railway transport plays a significant role in the development of national economy. In order to speed up the pace of railway information modernization, a project called train number automatic identification system had been set up. The goal is to install radio frequency tag to all the vehicle and train, and to install the reader equipment to the region area, organizing area and large goods transport station and boundaries station for the purpose of identifying the running train and vehicle accurately. These information provide the train monitor management system with the train sequence, number, attributes and location accurately. Railway radio frequency train number automatic system has become an important part of the railway information construction. The reader affects the stability of the whole radio frequency train number identification system .Radio Frequency Identification is an automatic identification technique without contacting, emerged in 1990s. UHF RFID is equipped with such merits as identifying the far-distanced, identifying more accurately, and identifying without disturbance, which had been well applied to the identification of the train number in railway. This paper do the research and design on the train number identification system based on the thought , design properties and experiences of the nation and abroad RFID products. The main research of content is as follows:(1) Research on the structure, inside information and working flow of RFID reader's working object—radio frequency tag, and introduce the technique regulations employed in the electronic label and reader communication.(2) Analyzing and discuss the function and structure of the reader, and illustrate the main unit circuit, controlling and software design according to the character of radio frequency identification circuit.(3) Give an conclusion on the design of RFID reader, and the future work of this paper has been discussed. The reader equipment worked stable after the test, results show it can work efficiently at 99.9999 percentages with transmitter power 32dBm, long available distances 8m and the train speed 80km per hour.
