Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is a wireless data traffic system, which can provide wireless connection. WLAN, as a substitute and extend project of traditional twisted-pair, coaxial-cable and optic-fiber-network, releases people from their desks, and make them able to transmit and receive data by using electromagnetic wave at any moment, everywhere, so it improves work efficiency. WLAN can execute traditional network communication function, such as file transmission, periphery device share, Web scan, e-mail and database visitation, and so on. With the development of computer network and the increasingly maturation of the technology of wireless communication, WLAN has developed very much. For the special situation of our country, the applications of WLAN are still in underway moment, but, both operating companies and equipment companies are paying much attention to the market of WLAN. In some big city and area, where has developed business and dense population, small scale of applications of WLAN has appeared. The physical system, which is provided by WLAN, brings huge benefit to both economy and society. So research on WLAN becomes popular in the near future. In this paper, the development of WLAN is described. The basic concept and characteristic of WLAN is expatiated. And the excellence and foreground is also concluded. In succession, the technology about WLAN is described. The standard on WLAN is described, especially on the protocol of IEEE 802.11, which is relative to our project. The definition on the wireless access point in the protocol is also presented. The key technology of physics layer and MAC layer of IEEE 802.11 are expatiated.Contrapose characteristic of WLAN, with the research on MPC852T, the high performance communication processor of PowerPC QUICC family, which is offered by Motorola, MPC852T is chosen as the core, and a complete set of hardware system of wireless AP accord with the protocol of IEEE 802.11 has been designed. In succession, contrapose this hardware system, the design of software system has been completed. Linux is chosen as the operating system. The software includes bootloader, kernel and device drivers and applications. The integrated system which functions as wireless access point is made up of the hardware system and the software system. Experiment is also designed, which is aimed at testing the wireless AP. Summary is provided at the end of this paper. The success experience and lessons gained are discussed. Several improvement ideas are also put forward.
