3-D measurement has capacious applications in engineering, such as its uses in medicine, manufacture and so on. With the development of computer graphics, Computer aided 3-D measurement has become the developmental direction. Computer aided 3-D measurement can realize many complex measurements which can not be done now, or reduce the complexity of many 3-D measurements. This paper makes an in-depth study on Craniofacial 3-D measurements, Based on these research, we has designed and implemented the 3-D graniofacial measurements system "SkullCom".The main research includes:1. The reconstruction of the 3D model. The computer 3D visualization technology is employed in the reconstruction of the 3D surface and volume of the computed tomography (CT) slices which have been disposed.2. 3-D interactive technology. In this paper simplified 3-D virtual sphere technique is used to realize the function of interactive rotation. We raise the method that is to divide the models into small grids to improve the original algorithm in the technical of picking up coordinate points, Experiment results show that this algorithm is significantly simplified.3. 3-D measurement and application. We achieved the 3-D measurement works, which mainly includes the distance measurement between two points(linear and curvilinear distance measurement), the angel, the area and volume measurement of 3-D objects. This paper raise a deformation and edition algorithm based on 3D calculation for 3-D Craniofacial Model. Experiments show that this approach is straightforward, interactive easily and can achieve good results.4. Integrating with the medicinal item. A 3-D graniofacial measurements system is developed based on object-oriented software programming method. This system is functional in data preprocessing, 3D model reconstruction, 3D interactive and 3-D measurement.
