Comparison And Research On The Thesaurus Visualization Of Relationships Among Descriptors

The thesaurus is a multilingual controlled vocabulary which contains controlled term and relationships among Descriptors. It is a semantic-based knowledge organization tool. As a method of information representation and transmission, a graphic is visual and intuitionistic, by contrast with a character. In recent years, the research on information and knowledge visualization with graphics or images becomes a hostpot. The visualization of Relationships between Descriptors is the process of the information visualization technology applied to the thesaurus.On the strength of information visualization technology, information visualization is rapidly running into the stage of web-based graphics and dynamic visualization. As a knowledge organization tool, the thesaurus visualization is far behind in the field of information visualization. It has completed the research and practice from traditional graphic display to the tree view of electronic and web-based thesaurus. The research on dynamic visual graphic visualization is still in the experimental stage. This thesis summaries the research progress of information and thesaurus visualization application in the digital library and network environment.Dynamic and graphic visualization of the thesaurus presently sill in the experimental stage. The main means of visualization achievement is ontology and the topic map, on the other hand, there needs a set of evaluation indicator system to evaluate and compare this two knowledge organization tools. The one of tasks of this thesis is to construct a set of evaluation indicator system of thesaurus visualization, and to compare the two visualization tools, which include the ontology edit tool Protege, topic map tool Ontopia's knowledge Suit, and individual visualization tool TMNav.In order to ensure a reasonability and objective construction of the system in order to ensure a reasonable and objectiveness, a specific visual realization process must be carried out. Based on the visualization of the same thesaurus, there are the comparable dimensions and factors between visualization tools. The object of this visualization achievement is a Traditional Chinese Paintings which combines Classified Chinese Thesaurus (CCT) edition II with Chinese Fine Arts Glossary, collecting 677 terms according to Five principles. This Traditional Chinese Painting Thesaurus has 15 relationships divided into four superclasses. After mapping this relationships into ontology and topic map, three different graphic views are get by visualization plugins or tools, which demonstrates that ontology and topic map visualization tools are fit for the visualization of new-type thesaurus with abundant relationships between decriptors.The construction of evaluation indicator system is divided into three steps: the first step is to extract evaluation factors, and the second step is to identify and evaluate evaluation factors and weights, the third-step construct the whole indicator system. The first step is established on base of the comprehensive analysis to information visualization system applied to digital libraries and internet, besides the representation methods of traditional graphic display, and specific visualization achievement. Therefore, applicable evaluation factors are extracted from the process of visualization accomplishment and representation. The second step assigns important value to each factor, sum up the total of every evaluation factor values, calculates the ratio of individual factor to the factor sum, and the weight of each evaluation indicator is get. The last step organize every evaluation indicator to form a three-degree evaluation indicator system, which has three first-level indicators, 11 second-level indicators, and 37 third-level indicators. Before the evaluation activity, evaluation standard values must be computed and confirmed. According to the standard values, evaluate the ontology and topic map visualization tools and give the last evaluation values. Thus, refer to the evaluation value, the analyse and comparison between three visualization is carried out successfully.The article discussed the last part of the reclassification of the term sheet for visualization of the significance of libraries and feasibility.
