Digital Radar is one of the main directions that Radar is developed in. The transmitting beam steering and receiving Digital Beam Forming (DBF) is the key technology of Digital Radar.Based on certain Radar with a big array, formulas of sum and difference beamformings are derived in detail, and the way of transmitting beam steering and the implementation of receiver DBF are studied in this paper. The real-time system of transmitting beam steering and receiving DBF for 440 antennas is designed by using advanced FPGAs and DSPs. The optimization scheme for shaped-beam forming with low side lobes using Particle Swarm Optimizer (PSO) is also studied. The FPGA designs of transmitting calibration, receiving calibration and simultaneous multi-beam forming are realized.Because of the large size of the array and the high rate of the system, some technology such as the conversion of serial into parallel, time division multiplexing (TDM), pipelining and other optimization techniques are introduced in the system to improve the efficiency of DBF after detailed analysis of the factors that affect the speed and quantity of the used resource.The test results indicate that this system is up to the design specification. This implementation of transmitter beam control and DBF in two-dimensional array Radar could also be used for reference in other Array Radar.
