As an important approach of increasing date transmission rate, MIMO technology is being gotten more and more attention, and has been considered as one of candidacy technologies that can be used in the next new generation of mobile cellular communication systems. However, antenna selection is a key issue in MIMO technology, which can select one or several best antennas from multiple transmitting and receiving antennas, and can reduce the expense with less performance loss and increase the performance-cost-ratio of MIMO system. Antenna selection also can reduce the number of antennas in receiver, and resolve a lot of practical problems in the design of personal mobile terminal. These problems greatly restrict MIMO development and application.Firstly, a comprehensive performance of orthogonal space-time block codes (STBCs) with receive antenna selection is analyzed. Two upper bounds on the bit-error rate (BER) performance are derived for any transmit/receive and selected antennas with two different methods. Furthermore,a tighter upper bound for the BER performance for the case of any transmit/receive and selected only one antenna. Then for the Alamouti scheme, also only one antenna is selected at the receiver, an expression for the exact BER performance is derived. Also the simulation results that validate the analysis are presented.Secondly,an overview of the typical antenna selection algorithms in MIMO systems are given. Owing to the comprehension and summary for the old algorithms, we propose a new antenna selection algorithm with low complexity, which the selection only at the receiver is considered. The selection goal is to maximize the channel capacity. The simulation results show that the new antenna selection scheme can obtain capacity closer to the optimum selection and has low computational complexity.Thirdly, the Correlation Based Method selection algorithm is modified and complemented, the increased CBM algorithm is proposed and the complete CBM algorithm is formed. The simulation results show that there is great enhancement on the performance of the system.Finally,antenna selection in keyhole channel is analyzed on the selection strategy and capacity.
