With the development of computer graphics, the plant modeling, as well as plant growth and death simulation has become a hotspot in the field of computer simulation research. Plant growth is a very complex procedure. Plant growth is affected by the physical characteristics of plant species, such as photosynthesis response characteristics, shade-tolerant characteristics and absorption features of roots. It is also affected by environment and the competitions with other plants around, such as water, other nutrients, light, and other plants' shade.In order to more accurately simulate the interaction between plants and their growth phenomenon in a resource shared environment, this paper analyses the functional plant growth simulation based on the FON (field-of-neighbourhood) model, and then gives improvements on both above ground and below ground parts of FON model. After the research of the interaction between plants sharing resources, this paper presents both above ground and below ground resources allocation strategies. And a method is presented to extract above ground competition factor, below ground competition factor and overall competition factor. Based on this method, the plant growth procedures can be modeled. In order to verify the validity of the method proposed in this paper, a resource sharing simulation system of plants growth is implemented. The growth rule of plants interacting with each other is visualized very well. The following respects are the mainly researches of this paper.1. Based on the traditional plant growth modeling using FON model, shade rate of botany and the latitude are brought in to improve the above ground FON model, and the characteristics of the plant roots is used to affect the below ground FON model.2. Based on the improved above ground FON model, this paper uses photosynthesis model of botany to affect the plant growth modeling in light shared environment. Competitive factors above ground can be computed according to the overlapping area of plants' above ground FON model, and based on these factors, above ground resources allocation between plants can also be modeled.3. Based on the improved below ground FON model, plant roots absorption model of botany is brought in to affect the plant growth modeling in soil shared environment. Competitive factors below ground can be computed according to the overlapping region of plants' below ground FON model, these factors also affect thebelow ground resources allocation model.4. With above two methods, the overall competition factor can also be extracted to model the plant growth in overall resources shared environment.5. Finally, this paper introduces the resources shared plants growth simulation system. The plant growth simulation of all kinds of resources competition verifies the validity of the method presented in this paper.
