Modeling and simulating for plant community growth with computer will explore the mysteries of plant life and bring about new opportunities of plant community succession. Up to now, the plant growth modeling mainly focused on the graphical simulation modeling, which pays attention to the visual authenticity. The study of knowledge modeling for plant community is relatively less, which pays more attention to the knowledge authenticity of botany and ecology.This paper presents a novel approach to simulate the individual plant growth based on environment influence model, the plant intra-species competition model and the inter-species competition model according to the botany and ecology knowledge, and these models are described with ontology. The description is finally used in the knowledge inquiry prototype system for the plant community growth simulation.The main studies of this paper are listed as follows:(1) The key biological characteristics on the individual plant growth and the relationships between these characteristics are extracted by using related botany knowledge. And the individual plant growth based on environment influence model is built combined with the environment impacts on plant growth.(2) This paper analyzes the competition between plants for the space and resources and the intrinsic link between the competition and the plant community structure bu using related ecological knowledge, and constructs the plant intra-species competition model and the inter-species competition model.(3) After researching the ontology expression for the individual plant growth based on environment influence model, the plant intra-species competition model and the inter-species competition model, the paper uses plant communitiy concepts collection, attributes collection, instances collection and axioms collection to describe these models. Constructing the four collections to realize the plant community growth ontology.(4) This paper successfully implemented the knowledge inquiry prototype systemfor the plant community growth simulation by querying the plant community growth ontology.This paper is mainly to build the plant community growth knowledge models and uses the ontology to express them. The knowledge inquiry prototype system for the plant community growth simulation provides foundations to the plant community growth simulation that will be researched in the furture.
