An important approach to make the design and development more efficient and to realize the interaction and data sharing between several design tools is to establish the Distributed Collaborative Development Environment. The data that used or generated by different tools usually are stored in heterogeneous relational databases. Then some effective data accessing protocol should be provided to make them shared freely among these tools.A heterogeneous relational databases integration system provides the tools in the environment with the ability to access data without the restriction that they cannot use the data stored in various databases, and facilitates mutual cooperation of different tools used in the same design process. To gain the flexibility and integrity while performing heterogeneous relational databases integration, an approach that employs XML as its intermediate format to fulfill relational data conversion is proposed in this paper. The mapping rules of relational database schema and data to XML documents with customized format are separately formulated. Then, the corresponding conversion algorithms are designed and implemented through the approach of schema conversion and data transformation separately. The experimental results demonstrate that, based on the above approach, the data conversion among different relational databases can be implemented efficiently and, at the same time, entity integrity and referential integrity of converted data are guaranteed.
