The development and research of embedded system has become more and more popular now. For its unique advantages, Linux is used as embedded OS by many embedded application developer. And ARM is the most widely used as an embedded microprocessor for its high-performance and low-cost. Bootloader development for different embedded platform is one of the keys to the design of linux embedded system, which has become more and more important.This paper focuses on RedBoot which is a kind of Bootloader widely used in the embedded Linux system, and discusses the research and practice of RedBoot in the development of linux embedded system.First this paper introduces the testing result of RedBoot method applied in medical instrument and the definition of Bootloader system. Then after analyzing the current Bootloader with open source in embedded system, RedBoot is chosed on EW-AW9302 platform as bootloader. Then this paper introduces in detail the process of Bootloading, and analyzes RedBoot starting from network, which is a method used by embedded product with net card equipment.Finally, it is introduced to how to design RedBoot with auto upgrading in detail, which has attributes of fast loading, easy operation and perfect function. Then RedBoot with auto upgrading is applied in medical instrument based on EW-AW9302 platform with ARM architecture. Redboot porting to ARM9 is completed. According to the test results, the project of RedBoot meets development standards. It has provided an effective means for the development of embedded products.
