Old bills has been more and more with the increase of bills in the market. It's very tedious to pick up those old bills, so it's not suitable to rely on cumbersome manual labor. The automation of paper currency sorting is an inevitable trend of the bank work of paper currency sort. As an advanced financial device, the paper currency sorter integrates optics, mechanics and electronic altogether to recognize the number, denomination, old and new as well as deformity of the bills, and as a result to distinguish the newer bills from the older ones. The use of paper currency sorter brings in mechanization and automation which can replace the tedious manual work. And now, low-cost high-performance paper currency sorter has been widely researched all over the world. The image acquisition and processing system based on DSP is used in paper currency sorter.The research background and significance , the history and current situation of the currency sorter as well as the relevant technologies are first introduced in the paper. considering the shortage of current paper currency sorter, an optical image acquisition and processing system has been designed. The system uses DSP DM642 as the CPU, the contact image sensor as image capture tools and FPGA as the logic control device.The details of the hardware platform constuction is described, including the design of minimum system and peripheral circuit of DSP, CIS circuit and A/D circuit, FPGA circuit and PCB. Additionally, lots of efforts are done on the software design, for instance, the design of FPGA logic control program, DSP low-level software and bootload program are also described in the paper. The FPGA program is designed to control the CIS and AD, as well as capture, store and transfer the image signal. The DSP program is designed to control the SDRAM, FLASH and MCBSP. Finally, the collected image signals transmit into the DSP. Image binarization algorithm running in the DSP verify the correctness of the hardware platform.Experiment results show that the optical image acquisition and processing system provide a stable and reliable hardware platform to the paper currency sorter and has a very high practical value.
