As an emerging human-computer interface technique that can mimic various human behaviors, such as looking, listening and action, in real-life world to the life, virtual reality has become an indispensable tool in modern society because it can help people build such an environment in which the users feel as if they are participating, can communicate with complex systems, and can undertake imaginary and creative activities. With emphasis on the Three Gorges reservoir area, this thesis addresses the issue of how to apply the MultiGen Creator modeling technique to the modeling of a shipping simulation system. The main work of this thesis is outlined below.①The key techniques involved in the MultiGen Creator 3D modeling, including the veins mapping technique, the instance technique and the layer-of-detail technique, are reviewed.②According to the complex scenes and large size of a part of the Yangtze River around a bridge and taking into account the high demands on accuracy and interaction, we suggest to use some key modeling techniques in the development of the shipping simulation system. This involves the static modeling technique of bridges, the dynamic modeling technique of ships, and the modeling technique of large terrain. Using these techniques, we build up a model of the Zhongxian Yangtze River Grand Bridge, a model of the terrain of the bridge area, and a model of ships.③Through a quantative analysis of the moving trail of a ship passing under the bridge under the influence of stream and wind, three types of mathematical models that mimic the movement of a ship passing under the bridge in different conditions.
