It's a great challenge to maintain the surface quality of package in the industry where production scale is large, production speed is rapid, and the quality of packing is crucial, such as in cosmetics and tobacco industry. Based on machine vision technology, taking the tobacco package as an example, this paper has developed a rapid package inspecting system to handle this problem.With particular design and calculation, to achieve high speed online inspection, the system chooses a high speed image acquisition module and PC workstation as the platform. The image acquisition module is consisting of a high-speed digital CCD camera, camera lens and an IEEE 1394 card. The maximum resolution of the camera can reach 1392*1032, and the fastest speed of acquisition can reach to 30 pictures in one second. A fixed focus lens is adopted here.The inspecting system takes VC++6.0, a tool of Microsoft, as the development panel. Many image process algorithms are employed to tackle some frequently- appearing flaw of package, such as the Gray Inspecting, Template Matching, Edge Angle Inspecting, Edge Misplacement Inspecting, Edge Distance Inspecting, and Bar Code Identifying. Through the flexible combination of above algorithms, the system realizes the package surface quality inspection.The hardware configuration of the inspecting system is practical, and its software satisfies inspection demands. It has passed the test of tobacco package inspecting. The system provides an alternative tool for product package inspection.
