The gas pipeline is used to transport the flammable and explosive media. Thus once accidents happen, vast loss of life and wealth will be caused. However, the conventional measures cannot assure the long-term safety operation of the gas pipeline. We need better technical measures to manage the gas pipeline system and prevent the pipeline accidents. Hence, the risk evaluation system is introduced into the management of the gas pipeline.The risk evaluation method is introduced in this thesis. According to the characteristics of the gas pipeline, especially that of the Shanghai city gas pipeline, this thesis analyzes in detail all kinds of factors and risk of failure during the transportation of gas via Gas Pipeline. Aiming at the actual circumstances of North Shanghai Gas Company, using the Analytic Hierarchy Process method, we construct the basic model of the GIS-based risk evaluation system for the gas pipeline , then improve and optimize it. Based on this model, we develop the risk evaluation system of the city gas pipeline.The data sets from the North Shanghai Gas Company are used to verify our system. The experimental results are compared with the practical application results. It shows that the system is more effective and can provide guidance on the safe operation of the gas pipeline. Thus the system can help to reduce the incidence of the gas pipeline accidents and the workload of routine maintenance.
