This paper describes the significance of magnetic flux leakage (MFL) inspecting technology on the tank floor and its developing situation around the world. Through comparing with other nondestructive detecting methods, the advantage and disadvantage of MFL inspection technology are analyzed.The paper introduces the basic theory of MFL inspecting technology, analyzes the characters of the disfigurement magnetic flux leakage, and summarizes the corresponding relationship between the flaw and its MFL signal, which is the basis of flaw detecting. Beside these, many factors which affect MFL signals, such as the nonlinear magnetic property of materials, the speed of inspecting, and the detecting environment, are also analyzed.The paper introduces the general structure of the MFL inspecting instrument totally, which includes the mechanical structure, performance parameter and the choosing of sensor. We draw the steps of MFL inspecting on the tank floor, which makes the technology more perfect and normative.The paper pays lots of attention to contact theory with experience. We have done a lot of tests in the laboratory using the MFL inspecting instrument IMS-5000A, and find that the result, which was detected in the floor simulating inspections, was according with the theory. This conclusion improves the feasibility of tank floor detection by MFL. In order to make the MFL inspecting technology served for the production of petrochemical processing, we confirmed its reliability by testing in the field of production and analyzing the data of tests.The MFL inspecting technology has a high inspecting efficient and accurate test results. It can save manpower and material resources. Being the base of scientific management of tank, the development of this technology will bring great economic, social and environmental benefits.
