With the production capacity of modern industry going up, the protection of process units and workers are needed. ESD(Emergency Shut Down System) has been widely used in petrochemical, metallurgy, electricity ,etc. As a safety control system, it had been researched, designed and used in some advanced countries in the early 1970s. Today, ESD has become a mature, secure and independent control system, no mere an interlock logic of emergency shut down controlled by meter and relay as it was designed early. Many foreign companies, such as TRICONEX, ICS(U.S.A), HIMA, Siemens (Germany), have developed their own ESD system already.Although we started late about the research of ESD, Our government places great emphasis on the industrial safety, ESD system has been spreaded widely in our country, especially in petrochemical Industry. In this paper, we will discuss how to use S7-400FH (Redundant Controller) that is made by Siemens, and hardware support module to config ESD system of SINOPEC GuangZhou Petrochemical Complex's sulfur Recovery project, according to ESD criterion and safety standards. After simply introducing the development, characteristic, safety standards, design and configuration of ESD system, we will focus on discussing the characteristic, hardware performance, redundancy work schema and application of S7- 400FH(Siemens).There are two main parts of the ESD that was used in SINOPEC GuangZhou Petrochemical Complex, one is hardware and the other is software. In hardware part, we will show you how to config S7-400FH according to the profile of project, and we will introduce the configuration of module, application of communication, characteristic and application of I/O module and configuration of power, etc. In software part, we will discuss the two main components, sulfur recovery and the preventing surge control of compress, we will show you their own procedure feature, and who to config the software of control system according to demand.
