With the development of communication technology, ad hoc networks are used more and more widely, and the networks are developed toward the large scale. Recently, with the development geographical information technique, location management scheme in the ad hoc networks research has got more and more attention. This paper improves the AOVD routing protocol and proposes a novel location management scheme based on partition areas forwarding pointers and pointers threshold.AODV routing protocol is a kind of on demand routing protocol. It combines the characteristics of DSDV and DSR. It both used the concept of sequence numbers in DSDV and imitates the routing discovery and maintenance process in DSR. When the structure of the network topology changes, it can self repair the open circuit. The novel location management scheme is realized in AODV. The scheme divides the whole network to several regions and chooses all nodes in a region for location servers. In the process of location updating, by setting forwarding pointers and threshold, it reduces the frequency of location updating and the cost of location updating simultaneously. At the same time, with using the forwarding pointers user could found the destination node and send the data packets. With the forwarding pointers, novel location management scheme could cancel the difference between near and far regions. So the number of service regions which need to update and maintain will be reduced, and the cost of the whole network will be reduced. In the OPNET Modeler simulation, the improved AODV could build the network, node and process mode, and collect simulation date including delay and cost. Compared with SLALoM and HGIRD, the novel location management scheme could reduce delay and network cost.
