With digital signal processing technology maturity, professional audio processing and transmitting are changing from analog to digital. In digital field, not only the implement of signal controlling and processing is much simpler, but also anti-jamming ability and stability are improved. Wiring and maintenance is a tormented work in a traditional audio system. So it is a trend that everyone tries to seek a more efficient method to solve these problems and get higher audio quality at the same time. The advantage of Ethernet is visible in this field. The band width is up to 100M between two computers via a CAT-5 wire according to IEEE 802.3u. We can build up a huge network by using lots of computers with hubs and switches between them.Based on the states above, transmitting audio via Ethernet is the way that we try to find out. Compared with traditional audio transmission system, audio transmission system based on Ethernet has many advantages in wiring, configuration and maintenance. It can be predicted that more and more network audio equipments will be present, audio transmission network composed by these equipments will be more popular.This paper introduced the status of development of audio network in both China and the other countries, and then analyzed the feasibility of transmitting real-time audio via Ethernet. The author also introduced the method and principle of transmitting uncompressed real-time audio based on CobraNet protocol. The scheme of implementing audio network based on CobraNet is presented here. The hardware, synchronization, route configuration and the whole procedure of digital signal processing are expounded. A report of performance of this system is given. Finally, the author described the prospect of the system briefly.
