The future of the communications network is a heterogeneous network with different access technology. The access network with different technology has different coverage, capacity size and the ability to support different QoS. An end-to-end QoS conversation may be across different types of networks, so it is required that all involved networks can consult QoS, and understand their approach to the requirements of QoS. Therefore, making QoS classification and QoS parameters in different types of network can be mapped to each other is a problem need to solve. To reflect the advantages of different technologies, there is the most appropriate QoS classification in each technical system. In the environment of heterogeneous network, how these classifications mutual mapping, and whether need to redefine a new classification method become a discussion of the hot spots. 3GPP, IETF and other International Organization for Standardizations all regard this as open issues. Therefore, what people are more and more concerned about is to better manage and control QoS at the same time of solving the problem of QoS mapping, and it is also the focus of the study to this paper. The results and progress of research in the Quality of Service (QoS) of the International Organization for Standardizations is studied in this paper. First , QoS classification defined by the International Organization for Standardizations such as IETF, 3GPP, ITU-T and IEEE has been made depth investigation and conclusion on in this paper. On this basis, two methods of QoS mapping to solve the problem of end-to-end QoS requirements consultations in the heterogeneous networks is introduced. Then, a set of unified QoS mapping rule which is relatively modest granularity and from the point of some typical application services is proposed in this paper. Next, a policy-based QoS architecture which is proposed in the project is introduced and the mapping rule will be adopted to achieve in this architecture. At last, the unified policy-based QoS mapping method is proposed, and the simulation to prove that it is effective in raising system resource utilization is done. The policy-based thinking of the unified policy-based QoS mapping method proposed by this paper makes management more flexibility and expansibility stronger. The granularity of the improved QoS mapping method is moderate, which can ensure the end-to-end QoS to a certain extent for heterogeneous network, support admission control, and effectively increase robustness. Finally, several projects the author participated in during master study are summaied in the paper, including research on admission control and resource reserved based on service classification in next mobile network, end-to-end QoS management in the heterogeneous network and research and design on anti-jamming solution for 3G system.
