With the increase of bandwidth of Internet, the quantity and category of services on Internet are increasing quickly, which makes the whole industry develop fast. The question coming out is how to process the authentication and statistics of traffic rapidly and effectively. Only if we can distinguish different users and services rapidly, make statistics of every user's traffic correctly, can the whole Internet industry develop healthily and steadily.However, Gigabit Ethernet's data traffic needs much higher speed network processor to deal with it, which makes the former single device not qualified to work. Using network processor to process the network protocol can be competent for protocol processing of high speed data, and it has become the developing trend of this field. So, this article designs the application environment, key function, and architecture of a Protocol Processing Unit on Network Processor.Protocol Processing Unit on Network Processor uses the single board computer as higher layer protocol processor. It uses the high capacity, high integration of ATCA architecture, putting switch board network processor board and servers into one machine, implementing a high quality data packet filtering system. It completes the work of authentication and statistics of user's request of services.This article introduces what the author has done about implementing protocol processing unit based on network processor during the period of graduate student. It can be divided into two parts. The first part is the theoretics about network processor, and the second part details the work the author did, which focuses on the design and implement of the rule matching and load balance module in data plane of protocol process unit.
