This paper designs a SOPC-based virtual color strip signals generator(for short instrument), it is used to test the performance of various VGA. The instrument consists of upper computer and lower computer. Upper computer is a virtual panel which is implemented using the LabVIEW by PC, its function is to produce and transmit data of pattern and color to SOPC system. Lower computer is a SOPC system, its function is to produce standard VGA color strip signals and timing signals by the data of upper computer. Upper computer and lower computer use serial port to transmit data.SOPC is a programmable system, it consists of CPU core, CPU peripheral circuits and other logic circuits on a chip. Lower computer uses ISE 9.1i integration environment of Xilinx as development tool, uses the IP core of Xilinx and portion of peripheral circuits VHDL sound code, author designs some special peripheral and logic circuits, then writes to FPGA, composes the special SOPC of virtual color strip signals generator.The virtual panel of upper computer is implemented by Universal Computer, network and processing functions of computer will enable the instrument and other instruments composed of display automated test system, which is the reason of virtual instrument used for the design.Under the guidance of tutor, all of the development work is completed by author, the major work is as follows:1. Under the existing conditions, as well as requirements of the instrument, proposes the instrument design project.2.Using VHDL language designs logic circuits and the special SOPC.3.Using LabVIEW designs virtual panel.4.Edits serial port communication program.5.Using assemble language edits control program of SOPC system.The virtual panel uses LabVIEW of National Instruments to develop by PC. The function of lower computer is achieved by Spartan-3E Starter Kit. On this basis, lower computer which is independent of board can be implemented. Using design principle and steps, adding relevant devices, the instrument can be designed various graph generator. The instrument design principle and steps have a good reference to other similar instruments and design of SOPC system.In the end, debugs the instrument by the experiment. The instrument can work reliably and it has many advantages such as: short development cycle, low cost, high flexibility and so on. It applies to small volume production or special function occasions.
