The Portable Multimedia Player(PMP) is a hot topic that is discussed mostly this year. PMP has many merits, it is able to play high—quality video and audio files, it is also browse photographs and be used as mobile hard drive or digital bank. Many products also have many new and applied functions.PMP will mostly obey the developing routine like portable digital audio player and personal video recorder. We can see the striking speed of the cellphone integrate Video and DV function,but many problems such as dimension(screen size), cost(Hard Disk and bigger LCD screen) and the time that battery can supply will make people need an independent PMP device.With numerous manufacturers rolling in, the PMP market of china is bursting. Nowadays, more than ten semiconductors suppliers provide PMP processor and solution project. And after the introduce of the developing of PMP, this article discuss the PMP resolution which use one kind of chip named MX21 produced by freescale company, including hardware and software two parts. The hardware design was mainly the architecture of embedded system. The hardware circuit was modularized based on the functional requirements of PMP system. We mainly analyzed some key modules such as video, audio and memory parts.The software design was based on Linux OS. We realized the transplant of Linux on ARM9 platform and the establishing of the platform of embedded Linux .With the analysis of architecture of the linux software, the video play function was modularized. The realizing of video play and by hardware decoder the driver of the peripheral equipment based on Linux are the stress pionts we discussed.MX21 based on high-powered/low power ARM926EJ—S kernel contained EMMA(Enhanced MultiMedia Accelerator) module. It could accelerate video play because it could encode / decode MPEG-4 and H.263 video files by hardware directly. With the flexibility of Linux OS, it could play video glidingly. At last, we analyse the system power and realize the low power system by optimizing LCD module which is the key power module. This kind of solution support a lot of audio formats, have high stability, operation is convenient, Power consumption is limited, and the price is low, this solution fully satisfied the demand of the market, and achieve the expected design purpose.
