With the introduction of many high-efficient audio and video compression standards such as MPEG-2 and MPEG-4, the Multimedia technology has been widely applied. The popularization of the broadband network makes the real-time processing and transmitting of video and audio data over Internet become an important research field of multimedia technology. Media processors are developed from high performance DSP processors. Compared with general purpose DSPs, media processors are more powerful and convenient to use in multimedia applications. Network products designed with media processors can be easily adapted to new video/audio/data standards.DM642 is a new media processor provided by Texas Instrument Company. Integrated with C64x DSP core, audio and video peripheral interface and network module, it offers ideal solutions for high performance multimedia applications. When working at a clock rate of 600MHz, DM642 can execute 4800 million instructions per second. This is a leading performance among all the media processors introduced into market. DM642 can be used to realize compression or decompression algorithm for many video / audio standards such as MPEG-2 and MPEG-4.At present, most DSP hardware systems with single function and bad scalability are designed to specific functions. Based on real-time catv signals collection as the main task, the platform is designed to achieve a variety of functional multimedia information process platform with scalability. This platform can be widely applied in a variety of video and audio processing occasions.The task of this paper is to develop a multimedia information process platform based on DM642, including the design and realization of the hardware platform. The task of hardware platform development includes schematic design, PCB layout design, system assembling, testing of all function modules. As a multi-functional platform, this platform can be use to collect, compress, process and store the CATV signals and can be use as video surveillance.
