By combining the advantages of modular design with parameterized design, Parameterized Modular Design has become one of the effective methods for realizing the fast design of products. With the carriage in crane as an object, SolidWorks was redeveloped by combining API functions of SolidWorks with Visual C++6.0. A parametric CAD system for the carriage in the crane was developed by object-oriented tool technology and modular design technology. The system has the functions of parametric design and auto-deployment of engineering drawings. The main points of the paper are described as follows.(1) Based on the analysis to the requirements of the system, the main structure of the system was designed. The main frame of the software was planned and the total system was divided into some functional modules.(2) By using the technology of parameterized design, the models and engineering drawings database were established for the total assemblage of the carriage and each module.(3) SolidWorks was redeveloped by using API functions and Visual C++6.0 as the development tools. Parameterized design of the total assemblage of the carriage and each module were realized.(4) A convenient database for design case management was developed by using of Access2003 as the database processing tool.(5) In order to adjust the irrationality of engineering drawings after parametric driving, the interface functions of engineering drawing in SolidWorks API were redeveloped and the auto-deployment of the engineering drawings was realized.By combining the theoretical research results of parametrization with modularization as well as the software technology, parametric CAD system was developed in this paper. With the software as a helpful tool, the design efficiency would be improved greatly. Moreover, the method presented in this paper can be also used in the design of standard components and other mechanical products, even though the research method was aimed at the carriage in the crane as an example.
