Rheological parameters play a very important role in the polymer processing industries. By the rheological measurement, the polymer processing could be optimized and the quality of the end-products could be improved as well. Injection molding is one of the most important ways of polymer processing. However, because of its unique characteristics of periodicity and clipping molding, the rheological parameters gained from the traditional capillary rheometer could not meet the needs of injection molding. To obtain more reliable polymeric rheological parameters in injection processing, a new on-line rheological measurement for injection molding had been developed. The polymer melt was plasticized by the plasticizing system of injection molding machine, and the was purged into the on-line rheometer for real-time measurement.This paper briefly introduced the on-line rheological measurement technology development and the status quo, and on-line rheometer testing theory has been analyzed. In studing on-line rheometer measuring and controlling system, we integrated computer measuring and controlling technology, and detailed the design idea and the implementing method, and included the entire system haidware and software architecture. Using the virtual instrument design method and visual graphics programming environment, we achieved a soft-virtual instrument panel. The research work had been developed in the following areas:1. According to the polymer rheological behavior in injection process and traditional capillary rheometer structure and measuring theory, on-line rheological measuring method was put forward. Moreover its mechanism had been analyzed. Compared with the traditional rheometer, innovation of on-line injection rheometer was the changing of material plasticizing action. The testing polymer melt was directly supplied by the injection machine to the rheometer, which could ensure the reality of the test condition.2. According to on-line injection rheometer measuring theory, the overall design scheme and structure framework were put forward. On-line injection rheometer measuring and controlling system were based on virtual instrument.3. The design implemented the main controller supporting software of the IPC as a platform; completed all kinds of control and data and also interactive virtual instrument soft panel; built a communication protocol between main controller and local controller; and used software to complete data collection, constant temperature controlling, interferer eliminating and ect. The software had abundant functions and the system was running well.
