Smart Antenna and MIMO are both multi-antenna technologies widely used in the next generation mobile communication. They are based on very different theories and each has its unique advantages. Smart Antenna works well with light multi-path effect while MIMO works well with serious multi-path effect. It's an essential issue to implement both of these two technologies in the system at the same time in order to get good performance in various scenarios. This dissertation investigates solutions on how to obtain MIMO gain with the precondition of TD-SCDMA smart antenna laid, delivers a proposal after comparing the simulation performance and analyzing thoroughly.Chapter One of this paper begins with the evolution way of Physical Layer technologies in mobile communication, and illuminates the theories of Smart Antenna and MIMO, then gives out a summary of the main contribution of this paper. In Chapter Two, typical applications of Smart Antenna and MIMO are introduced along with the development of them in both industry and standardization. Chapter Three investigates the possible approaches to combine these two technologies, and presents several known solutions with comments, then proposes a solution using cross-polarized antennas in TD-SCDMA system to obtain MIMO gain via polarization diversity. As the basis of simulation, Chapter Four mainly discusses the frame structure of TD-SCDMA and the dual-polarized antenna technology. Chapter Five and Six describe the downlink and uplink simulation scheme in detail. Simulation is developed to verify the performance of these solutions, and they are proved to be efficient. In the last chapter of this paper, a proposal on how to implement these solutions is delivered not only according to the simulation results and performance analysis but also with practical factors such as field construction taking into consideration. A prospect of another approach is also made as the work to be done next step.
