A software system used for image manipulation and mode recognition of spheroidal graphite cast iron with the help of VC has been developed.This system can be used to recognize and analyze fixed quantity the sphericized rate,the graphite diameter and global -joint of the spheroidal graphite cast iron at the cast condition.The shape of the graphite in the spheroidal graphite cast iron are varied. If the sphericized process is not very well, some graphite grains are quite irregular. In order to analyze them correctly and automatically, a serials of methods, such as gray transformation, threshold bilevelization,noise eliminating,seed filling,image enhancement,edge detection etc,are employed.The good results have been achieved.Though a few softwares of analysis the metallography microstructure of spheroidal graphite cast iron have been developed ,the software with the ability to analyze the global -joint has not been appeared.According to the production and the effects to the the performance of the piston ring made of spheroidal graphite cast iron ,the importance of recognizing the global -joint is presented first in this paper. The theory of "least two multiplication" in numerical-value analysis is applied to carry through linear-simulation of graphite's skeleton. The "Three Steps Reduction Measure" on the basis of shape-characteristic of global-joint is employed.The accuracy, reliability and reappearance can satisfy the requirement of quantitative analysis of metallography microstructure by testing the software system.The system has a great practical significance in constituting reasonable process,distinguishing rapidly and correctly the structures of the spheroidal graphite cast iron,redusing the waste products and enhancing the labour productivity.
