Field emission displays have become a hot research area in the display technique, as it has both the advantages of CRT and flat panel displays, such as high brightness, high-resolution, large visual angle, small volume, thin panel, low driving voltage and so on. With the merits of high hardness, high thermal conduction, negative electron affinity, diamond is deemed one of the preferred materials of the field emission cathode.A new type of field emission cathode is devised: with titanium used as the substrate, two methods—electrophoresis and spin coating have been proposed to achieve nano-diamond coating. The Ohm contact can be formed after the thermal bonding treatment of the Ti-based nano-diamond coating, and the field emission cathode can be obtained. Those factors which might influence the samples' field emission performance during two different coating processes have been investigated. The key parameters in each technique step, which include the dispersion of nano-diamond, film coating and bonding treatment, have been explored in detail, and the optimal parameters have been gained. The ingredient and surface feature of the samples are characterized by XRD, SEM and Raman, combined with the measuring and analyzing of the field emission properties of the samples, the difference and variation of the samples' field emission performance are explained reasonably. These works provide a lot of experimental and theoretical foundations for research the nano-diamond coating field emission cathode further.
