FED with all the advantages of CRT and flat panel displayers have become a hot study issue nowadays. Diamond materials have been regarded as one of the most potential materials for cold cathode as they present very good physical and chemical properties. Using diamond to work as cathode material is one of the important direction in the development of novel FED devices.Ti-based nano-diamond coating field emission cathode (FEC) has been supposed as a simple and effective diamond FEC which is suited to fabricate large-area FED. The spin coating and electrophoresis have been designed as two kinds of coating methods, and the whole process flow has been proposed as follows: dispersion and coating—thermal bonding treatment-hydrogen plasma treatment.The electron injecting model of this kind FED has been devised as Ti-TiC-diamond structure. Each part of this model has been simulated and analyzed by first principle calculation based on density functional theory (DFT), and the results show that the electron injecting from Ti substrate to diamond is an Ohm type.The FEC samples with better properties have been achieved by both spin coating and electrophoresis methods. And a lot of experimentations have been conducted on how to prepare proper FEC by these two kinds of techniques, the important parameters in each step have been investigated respectively, and the optimal parameters have been gained.The samples as-prepared have been characterized by XRD, Raman, SEM, TEM and AFM, combined with measuring and analyzing of the field emission properties of these samples, the difference and the variation of samples' FE properties have been explained and predicted reasonably. These works provide powerful experimental and theoretical foundations for understanding the mechanism of the samples and exploring the FEC with preferable properties.
